This is still a thing if you pickup local stations with an over the air antenna. Since I am in the Houma/Thibodaux area you can have your pick of New Orleans or Baton Rouge stations. Back in the days of analog, KLFY was pretty big down in the bayou area especially on those Sunday afternoons when the Saints were blacked out in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
We have a satellite dish on our RV that is supposed to work while moving...and it does sometimes. We also have a digital antenna that works when sitting still. It takes the latter about 30 seconds to find bunches of channels and will do so in pretty remote areas. If the satellite dish is in one of its moods it may or may not ever find a satellite. We usually use the antenna. The digital antenna works sort of like the analog type in that it is somewhat directional...no premium channels of course but it usually has local affiliates and always has MeTv.

When I started offshore the rigs had them. I was on the rig that got the first dish network installed.
There is a small cove on Toledo Bend that we call satellite cove because the dish has been there for almost 30yrs.

Yep, we had a motorized dish and also a motorized 50 foot antenna. No cable TV in our hood at that time.

I remember my dad spending three or four hours reprogramming the thing and if one of us kids messed it up and had to fix it again we were big trouble

Around this time in 1984, we got the ol' hand crank satellite dish, meaning you had to go outside to manually move the dish to different angles to pick up different satellites. About a year later we got the motor. One night my parents were out and were not to be back until later in the evening. Me, my best friend, and older brother decide to crank it to the satellite dish with all the porn channels. Long story short, my parents came back early, and Daddy immediately knew the dish was angled to porn paradise. We hear the car coming up the drive way, so we try to turn the satellite. Daddy walks in saying "Gotcha! ". Me and my best friend darted out the back door leaving my brother holding the bag. 1986. Good times.
