they are off duty/retired policemen who work for the funeral places but on funerals, they do traffic like real cops.

part of funeral price

if real cops, then person is connected or was police officer/etc and it's guys from traffic or cops who are off duty and doing it to represent the PD.

It's called a detail. No different than the cop you see at Walmart, a fair, or working a large event. They are off, but pick up details for some extra cash.

Yeah they are all retired. I went to a funeral Thursday that had 2 retired motorcycle officers. They were both about 30 years old.

I guess it depends on dept.
It was extra duty.
Funeral home has a set rate they pay for the service.
They put it in the price of a funeral.
Depending on the projected amount of vehicles depends on the amount of officers.
Sometimes you use to be able to do it for family members for free. After an officer got hit by a vehicle they stopped that. Everyone had to pay for the service.

Completely false.

Maybe retired, but probably not since they always have department issues vehicles. Probably off duty, because they're working a detail. Don't work for the funeral homes. All are "real cops"

Probably.

this thread got me thinking...

escort for a funeral is a service that every single person will need at some point. with that said, why wouldn't that service just be paid for by society?...

wouldn't the ultimate cost be exactly the same amount of money paid by exactly the same people?

What if I have 100 cars in my procession, and you only have 10? Mine would need a couple more cops than yours.. Why should society be responsible for my procession Price? And what if the deceased never paid a dime in taxes, was a multiple time convicted felon, etc..?

seems to me that the reason for the police escort is to benefit society in the first place...the dead person is certainly not in a hurry

If the dead person isn't in a hurry, then why the need for the cops? Part of the reason they escort a procession is to get it from A to B quickly.
