I remember after we overthrew the Taliban in Afghanistan there was some news special spotlighting the women in Afghanistan. Think along 60 minutes. They talked about how people were able to breathe and women didn't have to shut themselves off from the modern world anymore... they interviewed a couple of women living high in the mountains and they talked specifically about being able to listen to Michael Jackson tapes.
I know that's anecdotal, but I really think it speaks volumes about how universal his appeal was. To many people, he was modern/American culture packaged, branded and shipped across the world. He was actually bigger than that.
I was studying abroad the summer of 09 when he died and I found out because I noticed my hotel in Paris was playing nothing but MJ music when I woke up in the hallways/lobby. I asked someone at the desk and that's how I found out.
I just don't think people around the world would care as much if the situations were reversed. People found a way to isolate good MJack from the later MJack, which was part of the tragedy of his last years and demise.
In fact I think here in America Jackson's a bigger deal too. That's not to take anything away from Jordan, but music is more universal.

As I said earlier, a god damn Mongolian told me of Michael Jackson's death within the hour it was announced. I doubt that the world would care that quickly about Jordan.

Jackson revolutionized pop music and dancing.
Jordan revolutionized the sneaker industry and brought a huge audience to NBA.
But only one of them was a child molester. Jackson is more world wide famous and loved. Jordan wears tagless underwear. Jackson is the king of pop and one of the highest selling musicians of all time. Jordan was in Space Jam.
It's a close race. Id have to give the edge to Jackson. Even though he was playing with little boys in neverland.

And it isn't even almost close
Came across this thread after reading a Jordan slurp thread.
Michael Jackson is probably the most famous/beloved human being to walk this planet outside of Religious or political figures. Period.
At one time during Jackson's peak('83-87) & the height of the Cold War ,for good or bad ,the world viewed tne USA Pop culture as ;
McDonalds, Coke /Pepsi , Michael Jackson(MTV), designer jeans, etc..(maybe Hollywood).
Jackson (30 years past his peak & decades past his retirement /negative press) funeral was covered live by every major network & their A team anchors which shall not happen for MJ upon his death .
Jordan is probably not more beloved/famous an athlete as Muhammad Ali worldwide.
Jackson is an entirely different stratosphere. Not close.
