Babe was not only an icon, but quite a character. Larger than life fits him well.
He’s the most beloved American athlete, IMO. Hard to find anybody that has a cross word to say about him. Even us Red Sox fans.

When they say "He's the Babe Ruth of (whatever)", they're saying he's the greatest.

He is that, although Bonds was a better power hitter.
Hell no. Bonds was an inflated cheat. Ruth could eat more hot dogs than Joey Chestnut, down many drinks of bourbon, and still go out there and hit a home run.

I think that speaks more to the level of play in those days than Ruth.
Pitchers must have sucked balls for the most part then.

Na. Babe is number one.

Lies. Babe was an animal early in his career. All the modern hitters also hit off of pitchers on roids, so it was even.

It was a live ball era.

No. I love the Babe. He is clearly 1 in the OPs scenario. Prime Bonds was still the most deadly power hitter ever.

Babe, Hank, DiMaggio, and Mantle. Best top 4 in baseball history.

Babe had over 1,000 fewer ABs than Bonds.
