Agreed on location - no single person right out of law school presumably working for a firm and trying to build their reputation in the legal and business world of the city should be living way out in the suburbs.
Disagree somewhat on the downslide. I’m no nola sunshine pumper by any means. That said by any empirical measure the city’s crime is light years better than it was from the mid 80s through katrina. The city is more open to people and business not from here. Most neighborhoods have seen massive investment and inflow of a richer and more educated people. City is rife with problems but it’s improved in many ways from the 1985-2005 era

Everyone in NOLA always argues neighborhood boundaries
My mom’s boundaries of the Channel are not what is labeled on most maps
I posted what I found on a website bc there might be more of a consensus
That don't make it right. Boundaries are boundaries.

There have been plenty of good suggestions made thus far in this thread. I'd recommend somewhere Uptown near Audubon Park or the Irish Channel near Magazine street, but if she's more of a Lakeview type, more power to her.
If you're after the apartment atmosphere, check out both Saint Charles Gardens and The Georgian, both located on St. Charles Avenue and a close walk or street car ride away from countless great bars and restaurants.
The best piece of advice I'd give you, especially when looking at houses in NOLA - have a friend who lives in NOLA go scout the area before you go look at it or make a rental commitment. Check out the neighbors, the surrounding blocks and get the lay of the land.
Also, the first place she lives in NOLA doesn't have to be the only place she lives in NOLA. In fact, I'd encourage her to live in multiple areas of the city to experience the various nuances of NOLA life while she's here.
You'll probably never be completely at ease with her living in NOLA, but she's not the first single young professional woman to move to NOLA. As long as she's got a good head on her shoulders and a solid friend group, she'll be fine.

Meh. Lot of those are arguments are driven by people not from New Orleans trying to prove up their local bonafides. Irish channel, garden district, university, Carrollton. It’s all uptown. Cbd and warehouse district - all downtown.

New Orleans isn’t as unsafe as people think. I’ve lived here for years walking piss drunk down streets without ever looking over my shoulder. Educate yourself about the good points of town.
Am I safe on St. Charles? yep.
Am I safe on Claiborne? frick no
It’s the same thought process as a lot of “bigger” cities

I prefer a nice gated high-rise, but she prefers renting a house, possibly in Lakeview. She will have a roommate, so at least a 2BR/2BA. They can afford something nice.
What’s their budget and where will they be working?

Inner city crime has always been inner city crime. Homicides are a sexy thing to look at, but they're an awful indicator of danger to an ordinary citizen. Ordinary citizens aren't being murdered in 99% of homicides, and instead it's individuals being killed in turf wars or in retaliation for killings themselves.
There's been a spike in opportunity crimes in the past 18-36 months, and its bled to areas where they weren't really prevalent. The disastrous juvenile justice system is largely to blame, and JRW's oath to never charge as adults and to never use the multiple bill on anything are going to amplify the issue. Nonetheless, these are crimes where a person who gives up keys is typically physically safe. JRW won't be around much longer, though.

Mandeville, Covington, or Laplace.

Lower garden district is NOT uptown.
Irish Channel isn’t really uptown either. It’s south of magazine, but still east of Napoleon. East of Napoleon is the garden district below st. Charles and central city above st. Charles.
When I think uptown, I think the areas around Audubon Park, the universities, and the Maple Leaf Tavern. Specifically, west of Napoleon and south of Claiborne.
When I think the CBD, I think mostly the triangle between Poydras, Canal, and Loyola, whereas the warehouse district is closer to the convention center and the bridge on the opposite side of poydras.

Garden district is uptown. Channel is uptown. Brace yourself, but even Broadmoor (gasp) is uptown. Unless you a realtor and need to write a listing, it’s all uptown.

I mean, you do you, but you’re imprecise. I would say “wrong”, but the borders of neighborhoods are mostly arbitrary and made up by realtors, so who the hell cares. Uptown starts west of Napoleon (except for Broadmoor).
I was just pointing out where I meant so that OP would have a better understanding of what blocks I’m recommending.
I wouldn’t recommend a lawyer live in Broadmoor. That area’s roads are probably the worst in the city and it floods absurdly bad because it’s basically the lowest land west of the industrial canal. I used to live there. It was cheap, but I got what I paid for.

Uptown neighborhood is Napoleon, Magazine, Jefferson, St Charles.
Uptown area is anything upriver of New Basin/I10. Broadmoor would technically be uptown, but only people who live in Broadmoor call it that.
But in the same weirdness some parts of what people call the WHD is actually the LGD.

I was going to say you have come to the absolute worst place for advice. But when I thought about it I have actually gotten some pretty good advice here in the past. One suggestion here saved me around $700.
