We knew it as Pelican International Speedway.
Only went to one race there. On the way stopped at a seafood shop around CederCrest and Airline and bought about 15 or 20 lbs of boiled crawfish. At the time they were about 30 to 40 cents a lb. Ate them in the stands while watching the races. according to the number of people who asked where were they selling crawfish, they could have made a killing if they did.

My great Uncle owned a store on Airline and 42 during those years and had 100s of posters. Luckily they kept a few. My grandparents lived right in front of the track. Crazy stories of that event
I do think you have told that story here before. Probably in return to me bitching about how expensive those posters are now.

It was a speedway/racetrack at that time. Charleston (or maybe Willow Lake) was called Racetrack Lane at one point
I think it was Prairieville Raceway. In the early 70s my dad would take me to the races there on Friday nights. Had a lot of fun!! They would play football with crash derby cars, a volkswagon beetle was painted brown and used for the football. My memories of the drive there so long ago makes it seem like it was 100 miles from our house in North Baton Rouge. Very few businesses along Airline highway. Nothing but pastures and woods back then.

one of the times it would have been nice to have cellphones (or at least cheap affordable portable cameras) back then, not to check for ‘likes’, but so youd have pics to share with us today .
Until you mentioned it I’d never considered this. I’ve got some very old photos taken by my parents, family, or by me with “instamatic” type cameras and some taken with old “Brownie” box cameras. The photos are treasured and irreplaceable.
A photo of that guy dancing with Janis Joplin would have been a classic.

The event took place in 1969. John McKeithen was governor at the time. Edwards wasn’t elected until 1972.

I was there and can see myself in the photo. I am the one with the long hair.
