Fishing about 30 miles off Cameron one day, catching a boatload of snapper (before the regs). All of a sudden we noticed two crew boats untying from the rig and a guy yelling at us that it was about to get real bad (weather). We started the motor and turned the boat towards shore according to the compass to see the storm between us and where we need to go. Within 5 minutes we were riding 20' swells in a 22' boat. We could not make any headway in the direction we needed to go and the storm front hadn't even gotten to us yet. Knowing the boat would float, we figured the best thing to do was strap on the jacket and tie ourselves to the boat with a long rope so we would at least be found. About 45 minutes later, the waters literally calmed to the point that we could have skied to land.

People who are truly choking can't make a sound. If they are coughing or gasping and there's a sound, at least some air is able to get in and out.

quote:Had a similar experience. We got trapped in Maurepas one afternoon when a wicked thunderstorm rolled in. We tried to head for one of the inlets, but there was nowhere to run. When it hit, we were out in the middle of the lake, and the waves were 6ft+. We were in a 23' ski boat, and to this day, I don't know how we didn't capsize. The saving grace was that my buddy (who owned the boat) used to navigate small ships in the Navy. I probably wouldn't be here to tell the story had he not been. It was fricking terrifying. The storm knocked out power in all of the surrounding areas.
Really bad storm kicked up in Lake P one night. 3-5ft rollers. We were in a 17ft lake skiff with nothing to hold onto.

Exactly. That's why is scared me so bad. I knew as soon as I looked over at him he only had seconds and he would be gone. I'm not ashamed to admit as soon as that lump of food came out and i heard him cry, I broke down and bawled myself.

Was standing on the runway at Moffet Field watching one of our squadron's female pilots...it was a reserve squadron, so most of the pilots and maintenance personnel were weekend warriors...doing her touch and goes in a C-130.
Except on her first attempt, she attempts her landing on the wrong runway. So she banks hard to the left...towards where we were standing...to line up on the correct runway.
This was a severe bank, in a plane that flys like a brick. I swear it looked like the wings were nearly vertical. And she was banking towards us pretty fast.
Suddenly, everyone in the group had the same thought at the same time...this was a crash about to happen. And it was going to land right on top of us. Keep in mind this all this happened in less time than it took me to write this.
We all turned around and started hauling arse back to the hangar. Then behind us, we hear the unmistakable sound of rubber hitting runway. She'd pulled it off. I still don't know how.
What I do know is, that everyone that got off that plane was white as a sheet. Except for the instructor pilot. He was red-faced. I'd never seen him so angry before.
I know, I know :csb: :picsoritdidnthappen" etc.

No shame in that. My biggest fear is one of my boys (ages 3 and 1) choking.

Very understandable. Mine was right at 2 or was about to turn 2 when he choked. He's 12 now and just finished 6th grade about 2 and a half hours ago.

Some of you may recall this incident. I was 9 or 10 at the time. There were 3 kids who I believe had just graduated high school that drowned in the Amite river outside of Clinton in Bluff Creek. When they found the 3 boys, they had tied themselves together with a rope and attempted to cross the river.
Well my friend and I were back there riding out bikes when it happened. We knew they were there and my friends parents told us to just leave them alone, so we kept our distance. As we were riding our bikes we saw them standing by the bank of the river and I could tell they were messing with a rope. No big deal, my friend and I keep doing our thing.
As we are riding our bikes I spot something really strange and immediately stop. There's a rusted chain literally sticking straight up out of the sand making a perfect arch and going back down. I called my friend over to come look at it because a chain can't possibly make a rigid arch and defy gravity in that manner. Well when we turned around, it was gone, nowhere to be seen. When I stopped, this thing was maybe 3 to 4 feet away from me and I never moved.
My friend and I looked around for a second and in that time frame I saw what looked like the boys stepping into the river. After a few seconds he and I both immediately came down with this really weird feeling. We looked at each other and both said we need to get out of here. I looked back one more time and didn't see anyone where I had just seen the boys. We took off and went back home as fast as we could.
To this day, those events still give me chills.

Went through several test for cancer. They only got to the last test because the others were negative. A positive on the last test was basically a death sentence. A very quick one. Doctor called twice and left me a voicemail. I called right back and got his voicemail. I was really freaking out internally. All ended well but I will never forget that.

Ghost encounter.
Nearly struck by lightning.
I think that's the top of my list.

And I still worry about him choking.
My wife says I'm more paranoid about our kids safety than the Secret Service is of the POTUS. A good example of this is every night at bedtime it's tradition for me to carry our 5 yr old girl upstairs. My little girl loves it but what she does not know is that even at her age, she still terrifies me going up and down the stairs by herself.

Car stuck on railroad crossing with train coming. Trains scare the shite out of me to this day.
Honorable mention: almost being hit by a garbage truck as a kid.
Also scared of garbage trucks.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconwah.gif)

Do tell about the ghost encounter. Not that I think you're lying, I'm just always interested to hear these because frankly I have zero belief in ghosts or aliens.

Pretty sure he said his plane crashed, broke his leg and he escaped while it was burning.

We were at a beach in Hawaii. I was sitting higher up on the beach, watching my wife and kids build sandcastles, when a large shark of some type(looked like a tiger shark but I'm no expert) launched itself out of the water at my family. They all had their backs turned to the water. I just started yelling something and running and they turned around in time to watch it roll back in the surf. In reality, the shark landed five or ten feet from them but from my angle it looked like one of my kids was about to be eaten. I've never heard of sharks doing this at the beach, and we used to swim at this beach all the time.

sitting with my uncle waiting for an amberlamps to arrive while his Defibrillator was going off. he'd say "it's coming it's coming" and it'd shock him.

My answer is always the same in these threads: holding my daughter as she was in seizure and struggling to breathe and falling into a coma

Got another one I just remembered. I was out wakeboarding a couple of years ago with Shawn Murry (pro wakeboarder). We had a guy with us that was really good, he was busting out all kinds of flips. I was sitting in the boat looking back at him as he cut into the wake really hard. He did a flip and landed, the instant he landed I saw the fear of God in his face. He hadn't been paying attention and jumped directly in front of a pontoon boat headed the opposite direction as us.
The boat hit him head on. We spun around real quick and when we got over there he hadn't surfaced.
It seemed like 15 minutes but was maybe 15 seconds, he popped up and was alert. Me and another guy dove in the water and got him in the boat. Turns out he was ok. He was able to duck and one of the pontoons hit him and broke his arm. He was able to hold on to the pontoon and slide all the way down it as the boat passed over him. He said he heard the prop pass right by his head too.
Insanely scary moment for everyone on both boats.
