I will be spiffy:

-10 year old house.
-One AC the whole time.
-AC workers come for their Spring visit and discover a leak of refrigerant at the eval coil. Say it is operating about 20%.
- They add two lbs. or R22 to fill it up to its normal level.

When they come back in the Fall they said they would re-measure the amount I lose to determine if I need to replace it altogether. My thinking is that if it only lost that much in ten it isn't that bad. Should I start preparing to save to buy a new one in November when they come back? Tips?

If you invested $ into the stock market and lost 8% every year, for 10 straight years, would you continue to hold onto those stocks?

Probably best to start saving now and quit being a cheapskate.

I just replaced a 5 ton unit at a cost of about $4500.

The previous unit took R22 and it cost me around $800 to have it re-filled last year so its pretty pricey.

The key thing here is that the compressor died a year after I had the system recharged. That in itself doesn't mean much but could just be an indication that the unit is reaching the end of it life.

...I am not an AC guy in any way so just my .02

How do you know you lost that over 10 years?

Maybe the leak had just started and you lost that over 10 days.

R22 units run much more efficiently than the R410 A units. So they cool better and cost less to run.

Take that FWIW

This isn't the stock market. An AC isn't going to make more refrigerant for you to sell back to the AC company. You're going to lose some refrigerant over time. Terrible analogy
