A lot of people give this same advice, but going through this with my MIL just about everything she makes up we have to tell her she's wrong. It's always something about someone is trying to break into her house or she heard so and so say this awful thing or she's going to call the cops on someone for something they didn't do etc. I guess it's just her tendency or personality, but she never invents harmless stuff that doesn't matter. Nearly 100% of the time it's something that makes her paranoid to the point of not sleeping or angry to the point of getting the cops involved.

My dad quit driving when he got lost driving home. It scared him enough that he didn’t want to drive again.
If his doctor is that bad, find a specialist, make a separate appointment for advice and then take the FIL to see him.
