Years ago they were located off Choctaw between Monterrey and N Sherwood. One or two small metal buildings north of the railroad tracks. Basically building one at a time all by hand with simple machine shop tooling.

Yeah they started out on Mammoth Drive in the late 80s

I bought 2 trucks for our fire dept. when they were there.

Original owner was Chris Ferrara.

I bought 2 more from their current location + another foam pumper for our plant.

Partially true. Everything mechanical has a limited life. F.D.N.Y. can wear a truck out in a few years. A pumper can last over 20 years at our local fire house and then be used for back up service for another 10.

Someone mentioned pumps failing annual tests. Pumps don't wear out. Change the packing if it gets to leaking too bad and it will pass pump tests for as long as the rest of the truck lasts. I got a 1949 Mack to pass in 1990 easily.

I think the Ferrera guy sold it for a small fortune then opened a new place next door making the actual fire pumps that go into the trucks.

I think this is true. Ferrera is a big account of ours and our account manager said the same thing.

I hope Nola arsonists and other accidental fire starters are also cutting their hours FFS.

In many cities firefighters respond to most 911 EMS calls along with the ambulance crew for the purpose of aiding in gaining access to homes and buildings, and moving incapacitated people to the ambiance. Extracting people from wrecked cars is a regular occurrence. They do a lot more than just figh fires.

Agreed, I’m actually quite familiar with what they do since I have several in m family.

My point is more about using a 300-700k vehicle seems excessive and incredibly wasteful. Yet every accident gets a full pump ladder truck response it seems. They should have vehicles more suited to the evolving tasks.

So everyone piles on a smaller vehicle and responds to a medical call. What happens if they get a fire call while out of station?

Why does everyone need to respond to a 10mph rear ender? That’s kinda the whole point that’s confusing. A fender bender gets a response of 6-8 FD personnel and prob 500k+ in assets. EMS shows up to the same event with 2 people and an ambulance. Cops send maybe a couple. At least once a week I’m stuck in traffic because HFD sends a full size truck and 6 people (4 of which are standing around trying to find some shade) when they could deploy useable amount resources and use that money for better pay or whatever.

Ferrara responds to some major fires too. They went out to the navy ship that was on fire in San Diego a few months back.

Clearly you haven't been involved in this business. #1. We don't get the kind of details to know what is out there when a call comes in. Sometimes it is worse than we were told. Even if we kinew it was a 10 mph rear ender we don't know how many people are in the vehicle complaining of whiplash. Everyone has to be placed on a backboard. #2. We do have specialized equipment so that only a couple of guys can respond HOWEVER it actually costs more to have that much equipment.

It's cheaper to use one vehicle that has everything and everybody we need.

#3. Having one smaller vehicle would not help your traffic problem. Highways have to be shut down for the safety of the guys working these accidents. Vehicles just do the job.

He also recently lost a ton of money in the dry dock/marina world on the point in Biloxi. Bailed out and gave boat owners a couple weeks to get their boats out.

I really don’t care about the traffic, I’m more sick of hearing the departments whine about needing money and raises but watching them piss money away by sending a ladder truck and the full team to Kroger for groceries and letting it idle out front for 30 minutes. Hey my kid loves seeing the trucks so it’s cool. But I’m also not too concerned with listening to the whining or voting to throw more money at something with so much waste. And like I said, I’m much more familiar with this than you think. My grandfather was with Terrytown FD almost his entire life and have 2 other current full time FD family members.

You'd be the first motherfricker complaining when your house burned to the ground because two guys from the engine crew took the pickup to the store to get groceries for the fire house and the crew couldn't respond until the grocery run was able to return to the fire house so they could take the fire engine to your house to fight the fire.
