What sucks is the "other" model that's been tried is donations/patreons of content creators. I'd much rather watch a short ad before videos than pay actual money to keep channels alive.
Agreed. But not everyone does. Teenagers and kids are the largest group of consumers of original video content, and they are willing to pay to watch videos or support content creators. You can look up Twitch, a fast growing video game streaming service. People stream themselves playing video games, and kids gobble it up and feed them money in the form of donations, subscriptions (with minimal benefit), and ad revenue. Some of the streamers are really entertaining to kids (like Pewdiepie on YouTube) and make several hundred thousand dollars every year easily
The bigger YouTube channels (h3h3 for instance) make way more $$$ from external sources than from ad revenue. This unfortunately means that this ad fiasco hasn't affected the bigger guys all that much: much more on the smaller channels. The neat thing about YouTube though is that the big channels care about the small guys (one of the only places I've ever known to do this) and the big guys are using their voices to hopefully bring awareness for change.

It is total garbage.
Folks with millions of views no longer getting paid because of overly sensitive corporations.
Wish they would make a list of said overly sensitive companies so I could boycott the pansies.
The pewdiepie nonsense was blown to full sjw code red level. Annoys me to no end that corporations are now afraid of tiny but loud segments of the population.

Person does something in poor taste on the internet, global brands shift dollars to reduce risk, PT board culture warriors gear up for battle with bastion of liberalism the Wall Street Journal.
Life goes on unaffected for reasonable people

Except the article wasn't about a joke made in poor taste. It was about a the most popular person on an incredibly popular website being a Nazi sympathizer and a face of white supremacy....
No one would give a shite if the WSJ article simply pointed to a video of low brow "shock" comedy. People would give a shite if the article pointed to a video of super popular internationally known "celebrity" advocating white supremacist views and pro-nazi ideals.
The problem for WSJ is that the video is just low brow shock comedy, so they had to massage it into something more interesting to generate clicks and views.
