If you are truly into the outdoors it can't be beat, you have boating, fishing, whitewater and ocean kayaking, snow skiing, hiking/backpacking, rock climbing, bicycling. If I every move it will be to there.

I lived just outside of Seattle for three years.
It is a wonderful city in a lot of ways.
The good:
The neighborhoods are hard to beat. Fremont, Capitol Hill, U District, Ballard, Queen Anne, and on and on - just a phenomenal set of really cool neighborhoods.
It is aesthetically amazing. Very clean and the views of the Cascades and Olympics are unreal.
Interesting and educated people
The cons:
It is a long, long arse way to visit family and friends if you're from the eastern half of the US, especially if you're going somewhere not near a major airport back east.
The gray and overcast really gets to you after a few years.
The traffic is pretty bad for a city its size.
Hard to really get to know people.
I actually didn't find Seattle to be all that liberal, at least according to its reputation. It is a business city. Portland on the other hand...
The homeless aren't all that bad, either. They have about the same in both amount and kind that Chicago has. Portland is far, far worse in this regard, as is a good chunk of southern California.
If I were going to move to that area of the world again, I'd move to Vancouver. That is the prettiest city in North America, maybe the world. Though I've never been to the others, I have heard that it rivals Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, and perhaps a few others.

We went a few years ago and loved it. I like the rain so I think I would do well in the PNW.

To be fair, a lot of places out west are good in this regard. Reno is actually really great for outdoors stuff. I have a friend that moved to Folsom, CA to work for Intel and it seems like an outdoorsman's paradise from what I can tell.
I'll put it to you this way. The dude is politically/fiscally conservative and enjoyed hunting, so he was real reluctant about moving to Folsom from Louisiana. 3 years later he says it was the best decision he ever made.

I like Seattle, but I wouldn't want to live in the 206 area code. FAR more expensive than Olympia or even Tacoma.
We live in the Olympia area and it's a far lower cost of living and just a 55 minute drive north to downtown.
