I'm fascinated by ancient advanced civilizations. Most people think the advancement of culture, technology, and society is linear in human history. They can't comprehend the high quality of life and conveniences available to a middle class Roman.
War, natural disasters, and even political unrest destroyed many of these civilizations. The result wasn't simply to rebuild. Often it took hundreds of years, if at all, for the remnants of these civilizations to once again reach a similar level of sophistication.
I would choose one of these ancient cultures. The Minoans in the Mediterranean would be interesting. It was a highly advanced Bronze Age culture built on trade. They interacted with Egypt, so there would be insight into them as well.

Took an anthropology class in the late '80s and covered Ramesses II and the Hittite Empire (among others). I have a book titled Splendors of the Past: Lost Cities of the Ancient World
Forgot about WWII aircraft production

Honestly, I find myself being interested in any type of American history from right after WWII - current.
Of course the founding of this country, civil war, WWI (sort of put us in position to become a superpower), the great depression, etc.. All of that obviously had a huge impact on where we are today, but the result of WWII put us in front as the super power.
I refer to the time span I mentioned as "current history", but there are many things socially, economically, politically, etc that happened that played a direct effect to the world we live in today and I just like to have a better understanding of it all.
