As a whitewater kayaker, I get it, I can die on any run. But it comes down to my abilities in that moment with nature. I won't be killed by someone else's neglect, it will be my own. That makes you feel alive.
I remember white water kayaking in the Boy Scouts. It was kinda cool but I was 8

I have lived near mountains for a good while now. Every year several folks die kayaking. Also have lived near the beach before. Every year several tourist die in the undertow. When you visit, it is keep out of sight and suppressed for the news more than a news cycle. Locals know how dangerous the waters can be. That is what strikes me as odd. I get being ignorant and taking risk. What I don’t get is the full rejection of reality. I think it is a sign of how desperate we are humans to feel alive. I call it dying to live.

Kayaking at 8 in white water? That's impressive. Hopefully you're not confused with rafting. Regardless, thanks for the story.

When you think of the thousands that visit, it really is pointless IMO. Odds are very slim.

That’s where I think we use statistics to soothe our minds.

There's no "soothing" our minds about it. Any good statistic bases the activity on how many participate (usually per 100,000). Either more deaths happen doing one thing than the other, or they don't. If you can't kayak or swim, yeah, you're more than likely going to be an anomaly, as a reasonable person doesn't do either without some level of expertise.

How do you calculate the horror of death? I mean, if it goes bad it can be really bad. We act as if death itself is manageable. It reminds me of corporate lawyers advising that a recall is more expensive than settlements. But what is the value of life? What amount of money would you take for losing one year of life?

You realize that there is a 100% chance you will die and make peace with it.

If you whitewater with others you can be killed by their neglect.

If I'm depending on them to rescue me, yes.

There are somethings that you cannot escape. I have seen people held down by kayak and have to be sawed out.
