I agree that's probably right semantically. But in practice, let's say I wake up at 1:15PM on Saturday hungover from spending all night drinking at Cajun Bob's Liquor and Whore Emporium. In my mind I'm thinking, "Remind my not to do this again next Friday".

While it may be technically wrong, for me the countdown to "this" Friday doesn't begin until the hangover from the prior Friday ends!

Example - What are you doing next Friday?


That doesn't make as much sense as you want it to. Saturday is a definite gray area when it comes to "This" vs "Next."

Saturday has nothing to do with it.

Inherent in the phrase "next Friday" is "NOT this one, but the one after"
