kind of goes with what I posted, leaving literally millions on the table, forced out of the mil after twenty years with nothing but tri-care and a meager pension to show for it, not to mention having to get a real job

First, he is the smartest human being I personally know. His IQ was tested by the Air Force and is genius level. Second, he retired from the Air Force because he was going to be promoted to Colonel if he stayed and given a desk job. He was only ever interested in flying. So he retired after his 20 years and took a job with a private contractor doing pretty much the same thing he was doing before and at the same Air Force base. Third, it was never about the money. He has more than he needs. He just wants to fly and play golf.

go to Middle Tennessee State University and major in Pro Pilot. MTSU has their own airport. I have a lot of fraternity brothers that did this. Most are flying in the military now and will eventually go commercial. It's tough to land a job in commercial if you don't have military experience.

Damn, it would take an act of God for me to not go military if that's what it cost to become a pilot. I am sure those Air slots in the AF/Navy/USMC are pretty insane to get these days as well.

i know a few who went Navy/AF with Pro Pilot degrees and didn't end up flying. Was a bummer.

I've always required adult supervision, even now they send up to three adults to watch over me

He went to the Air Force Academy. I don't know if it was done there or after he graduated.

That's always the risk. Guys wash out sometimes, even guys who are good civilian pilots. I remember reading an article written by an Air Force IP that said he had a student with 1000 hours who just couldn't do formation flying in the T-6. He couldn't graduate UPT and ended up in a non-aviation job.

It still seems like the smartest way to go though.

hard to believe but I suppose it happens, guy should have been a chick or a raghead, then they would just keep changing IP's until they found someone to sign them off

The training and hours required, if not going military route, is close to $200K. Even with military back round, you will start start at less than $30K with a commercial carrier and work like a dog for 10 years before you even sniff $100K these days.

Lots of pilots on food stamps out there.

as posted earlier, you could do it a lot cheaper by buying a trainer and hiring an instructor

I went to ATP in 2005. Got Private all the way through Commercial multi and all the CFI ratings. Paid 52K total I think. That was about 120 multi time 80-90 single engine. Also included apartment.

Yes. I think it was 45K for the actual school and a few more the tests and checkrides. I swear I'm not making that up.

I believe you, I've just been away from that part of it for so long, the cost is crazy, I think now I'd buy an old arse 152/172 for around 15-25k and just hire a starving flight instructor, did VA benefits help with any of that?

They paid for the tests and checkrides but nothing else. They didn't pay for the actual training. That has changed since though of course. frickers.

I wonder if the current contract(I think) of college tuition paid after commitment would cover flight training costs above tuition and books, do you know?

I don't. I do know that the GI Bill will cover flight training costs. But I'm not sure if it will cover tuition and flight training. Is that what you're asking?
