24 of my fraternity brothers went to Lesotho, Africa this past spring break and it was far from a vacation. Hands down the hardest week of manual labor in my life. That altitude in the South and the heat are deadly. We helped a lot of good people make a living during a horrible drought season. For instance, we built a massive retainer wall from boulders we rolled down the mountains there. In the middle of it we built a chicken coup that will sustain an egg business for a local preacher that will use to generate money and fund bibles for his church. It may not have made a huge difference on a global scale, but it helped that small village more than you would believe.

The poorest person in America is entitled to:
Government provided housing, food, water, Healthcare, a cell phone, and money every month to help them live. They also are guaranteed education all the way through high school, and even college with a little work, and then there are a plethora of jobs available.
The poorest person in Africa is entitled to:
Dieing early so they don't have to watch their own family die brutal malnourished deaths in front of them
You are right in so many ways! The entitlement society in America is sickening.

Our congregation has around 3000 members. Not a mega church but not small either. We do around 8 missions trips a year. Four in the U.S. And four overseas. We usually have 10-20 per trip. They do work and labor while there but also assess the needs of the village/community and present them to the church upon their return. As an example, our congregation raised enough money to have 3 wells drilled and installed in Uganda this year where the availability of clean water was scarce. The villages were within a 20 mile radius of each other but only had one well they all shared. Villagers would have to walk 5+ miles daily to fill buckets for drinking water. My perspective might be off but a I think that probably carries more weight from a compassion stance than belittling people who actually do it on a message board. But that's just my perspective.

My grandfather used to always say the same thing: instead of spending $2000 a person to go somewhere for a week just send the money and do more.
The main problem is Jesus' command (not suggestion) is to actually go and share the Gospel.
Another problem is that churches won't continue to give to a place they have no connection with. My church goes on mission trips to Romania about once a year. We also help support a pastor. If we stopped going there it wouldn't be long before giving would stop.
