quote:CCS, at least in LA from the projects I'm familiar with, do not store CO2 in caverns. It is injected into a specific rock formation that is essentially like a sponge with tiny holes all throughout. It is called pore space.
Okay so what happens to the CO2 stored in the cavern.
quote:Highly unlikely unless there is a major failure in the injection process. Once in the pore space, not it cannot leak out.
Could it leak out or displace other layers in the strata.
quote:Yes, it calcifies into the rock over time
Could the CO2 compress and form into a solid under pressure?
quote:No, the injection space is a 5000+ feet below the water table
Could it also escape into the water table turning water wells in the region in to soda water?
quote:Who knows
Could one day future earth beings drill for carbon dioxide as a necessary element?

Possible, though that's generally not how that works. The site is picked before the application is submitted, and looking at the list in Louisiana, appears companies just went after large contiguous landowners to avoid the headache of having multiple separately owned tracts involved in the storage unit.
