A volunteer firefighter was killed in the line of duty Wednesday in West Feliciana while responding to a crash on U.S. 61, said State Fire Marshal Butch Browning.

Browning said the firefighter was working an accident on U.S. 61 just north of St. Francisville when another vehicle crashed through the initial scene, striking the firefighter. The firefighter died of his injuries.

State Police is investigating the crash, Browning said.

Browning did not release the identity of the firefighter.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this dedicated firefighter, as well as to his fire service family and the community of West Feliciana Parish," Browning wrote in a Facebook post.

fricking horrible. 100% chance he was hit by some piece of shite going well over the speed limit who hit ice and couldn't stop or swerve.

What an awful story. As the son of a former firefighter, my heart goes out to that family. Tragic

Dude is probably gonna get some jail time over that and be financially ruined. Was the road closed?

I know a lot of roads in Alabama we're closed. Driving on closed roads in Alabama voids insurance.

He wasn't a volunteer. He was the Deputy Chief. Keep his family and friends in your prayers. Please don't speculate. Stay off the roads.

He was a great guy and a fine example of how you should live your life and be happy. He will be sorely missed. They don’t make many men like him. This was truly a big loss to his family, community and his chosen profession. It is just REALLY sad beyond belief.
