So is a farmers carry different than say a delivery man carry or a roustabout carry? What makes the farmers carry so darn special?
I know you were being cute but I will answer anyway.
There are multiple carry exercises with farmer's, suitcase, and waiters being the most common.
Farmer's is equal weight held by you saide in both hands
Suitcase is weight held on just one said
Waiter's is weight held in one hand with the arm extended straight up
Each focuses on different muscles and works many small as well as primary muscle groups. They are all very efficient at hitting large numbers of muscle groups at once.
The walking part is important because it engages lots of the smaller groups to stabilize the weight as you shift while walking.
The weighted vest helps because it allows you to add significant weight mainly to the large muscle groups like the legs so you can work the small and large muscle groups to failure at the same time providing for a efficient workout and it helps on the cardio pulmonary fitness side becaise you you have to provide oxygen to a large part of your bodies muscles at one time.
I do a combo where I start with a farmer's carry, then do alternating curls, then shoulder presses with a single arm tricep press at the end. With a weighted vest appropriate for me and proper sized KBs it is an extraordinarily useful exercise for almost every muscle.

I’ve been walking behind a trailer throwing bales of hay on it or stacking them on the trailer for years during the summer. Never knew I was so close to being a trend setter.
But to your point, it does sound like a challenging workout. I know loading and stacking hay wore me out.

I don't see the issue with weighted vests on people
While 30# in a ruck are rookie numbers, I agree. It's more effective outside than inside, because even if you quit outside, you have to walk that shite back to where you started, so the suck continues anyway. On a treadmill you just get instant relief/shame for quitting. Embrace the suck.
Anything that gets women out of the skinny fat trend that took over the 90s and 00s, is awesome.

Bone dry bales were bad enough but when you were stuck baling in between rains the wet bales were torture over the day. Then you had to worry about mold and spontaneous combustion.
Most exercises, especially practical fitness ones are a direct copy of work. It is just hard to find a farmer putting up hay 3 days a week 52 weeks a year and even harder to find one still putting up mostly small square bales. Pushing large round bales around the pasture would be a good workout, though. One would have to be a beast to push one up a terrace.
