Every time you read of these attacks it's always "they were such sweet dogs" --until the moment they killed someone.

perhaps rather than banning them, there should be strict regulations about needing "x" amount of acreage to own one, (like horses...you need a certain amount of acreage) so they aren't in close proximity to neighbors and other pets.

I have never said to ban them. But they need to be controlled better by their owners. And I will say this. If a person see a beware of dog sign and ignores it, they get what they deserve. No matter the breed.

Those are some funny numbers in that link. Did you even bother to read it? For instance, where do you get the population of pits at 6.7%?

If I see a pit bull around my place, it dies. No questions asked.

While I swore I never would own one, I do. Long story short, my ex's dog I ended up with. This dog completely changed my perception on how SOME pit bulls can be. I've never met a sweeter dog in my life. She loves to cuddle and will lick you to death.

That being said, I understand that pit bulls, as a breed, can be aggressive. But I am here to tell you that there are some good ones out there.

Trump may be on to something. Exterminate the owner and his entire family if his pit bull kills someone.

I know someone who had a pit just like that. Sweet as could be. Then one day out of nowhere it tore the face up of their two year old daughter. She is never gonna be the same again. They can't fix the damage. It took less than one minute for the. Damage to be done.

Luckily haven't had to snap after an L5U game.

Totally agree. I don't have kids and wouldn't ever have the dog if I did. Only takes once. Would never risk it

exactly. ANY dog has the potential to bite...but the potential of the damage that a pit bull can do is so severe. It is a myth that they have special jaws, but they DO by nature hold on and not let go...it is very difficult to interrupt them once they in attack mode. Where another dog might bite once and release, a pit bull attack is quite another thing altogether.

While you're making rules and telling people what they should and should not own, is there anything else you would like to add to the list?

I don't think they should be illegal, but I think I should have the right to put down your dog if it is a threat to my family. If your Pit is in my neighborhood, it's a risk I would rather not take, I would consider it a threat to my family.

Golden Retrievers aren't out there ripping up kids faces.

What is the draw on owning one? They all say they are sweet etc, but there are tons of dogs out there that are just as sweet that don't have the strength and aggressive nature to maim and kill.

I agree with the poster above that said a pit is akin to a gun, and if you own one and yours attacks you should get negligent homicide at the least.

This is the problem with this debate. People turn up with this crazy idea that that pits are some kind of monsters roaming the streets. It's just not true.

I get what you're trying to say, but everyone knows you won't follow through with your threats. I am telling you that you don't have the balls to do what you say you will do. You just don't have what it takes. Say whatever you want to justify it, but you're all talk. If not you would be making the news for killing dogs right and left.

I've worked with plenty of them but I'll never own one. Usually great dogs but the price is too high if they snap. I'll stick with a family friendly one around my house.

I'm not reading this thread, because it's gonna be the same old shite, of the people defending Pit Bulls. This has been brought up numerous times...All dogs have a bad day...when a pit bull has a bad day, it usually ends up in death.

But couldn't the same be said for any animal of similar size? It's not like they are any stronger or faster than other dogs. What about the number of pit type dogs vs the number of rots or mastiffs that you have worked with? Would it be fair to say you have seen far more pits?

Knowing what you know, don't you think saying a dog will snap without warning is a little disingenuous of you?

Dude, you don't get it............ I don't live in a subdivision with neighbors all around... a pit around my place is practically invisible to any eyes but mine. Get my drift?

It could be if I really felt like the other dogs were as likely to snap. I completely admit that my opinion may be influenced by all these types of stories but I don't see this happening with boxers or goldens (both of which I like a lot and prefer to own). I won't support a breed ban but will never have one in my home - esp when we have kids.

Yes and no. No because I have had some very close calls with animals that, to me, showed no warning signs before lunging at my face. I see no reason to believer that it couldn't happen in a home.

Yes because I admit that, despite my career revolving around dogs, I am not an expert in interpreting dog behavior and could have missed more subtle warning signs.
