Wow, I can't believe I never noticed something so obvious. Oh well, like you said, still a great movie!

In 1916 the folk song was arranged for choir by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych
Mykola's great grandchildren owe a great deal of gratitude to John Hughes over the popularity of Carol of the Bells. The royalties paid out for it before Home Alone as opposed to after Home Alone have to be night and day. It's probably the Trans Siberian Orchestra's most recognizable song and that doesn't happen without the movie.

- Nice warm fire
- Room service
- Hundreds of gifts that miraculously appeared overnight

Watched it again last night and I truly believe 2 things make the movie great:
First, you can believe the story (relatively). The way he was left was believable. The way the robbers scouted and prowled was believable. It wasn't an overhyped, overexaggerated Hollywood story.
Second, Kevin acts like a kid. Hughes was able to completely portray a boy of Kevin's age. I can absolutely see myself at that age thinking what Kevin thought.

He couldn’t go to the police because he stole that tooth brush and fled from the cops. Even if he did, did you see how incompetent they were when his mom called them? The child services office couldn’t give a shite.
On top of that, one of the wet bandits comes to the house dressed as a cop to case the joint. Kevin sees that and then sees the same guy trying to get in the house...

Sadly, there will never be another John Hughes… check out this amazing resume the movies he wrote
After appearing in Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science, Anthony Michael Hall decided he needed a break from movies, or at least those types of movies.
Hughes approached him and offered both the role of Duckie in Pretty In Pink and Cameron in Ferris Bueller - Hall turned both down. It hurt Hughes so much he never spoke to Hall again.

Hollywood can't ever make movies like this.
Did "Hollywood" not make Home Alone?
