We ditched prime for W+ and have really enjoyed it the past 6 months or so. Free shipping on pretty much everything, we both use the gas service, they deliver the most mundane things same day we don't want to leave for.
Unlike Amazon's prime shipping that went to shite for us, Walmart actually has it to us in a couple of days.

Do you have to use the AMEX card to pay for things on W+ to get the benefit? Just one purchase a month or a certain amount?

No.. they basically do a credit to your account for the monthly fee. Also Disney plus,Hulu,espn bundle is credited back with the platinum
