We are not speaking of a cooler, we are speaking of a freezer. Ours was minus 20 degrees. You arn't gonna survive overnight inside no matter what you do. I always put a section of rebar down to block the door when I worked in one.
the places i worked back in my teens they had a stick tied above the door so it blocked it from closing unless you lifted the stick out of the way.
i think the story here on this door is, the safety release lever was broken and jammed somehow, so it wouldnt work to open the door

could you stay alive long enough for someone to come in to work and open the door? Would you have enough oxygen in one of those things to sustain you? Seems you could break off a piece of metal shelf support or something and wedge it in the fans somehow. Would this stop the cooling/freezing? Thoughts?
If you disabled the fans it would help a lot. Usually there’s a switch so maintenance workers can shut off the fans. But it’s in kind of an inconspicuous location. Oxygen wouldn’t be a problem.

With metal shelves, I assume, and nothing but the rest of my life to work on it, could I disable the freezer? A vent or light? Something I could make short out?
nope, if you damage the tubing the freezer fills with freon and you are dead in less than a minute or two
the lights for safety are 12v lights so they dont electrocute you, there is no access to anything that would let you short anything out
those things are made to handle dumb stupid kids slinging mop handles around without it causing any serious issues.
the only way to disable it is from the outside by shutting off the breaker or the fuse box and most of the ones i saw, the thermostats are mounted on the outside wall of the freezer/cooler, not inside it

Disabling the freezer fans would only help with the "wind chill", so to speak. A commercial freezer would stay very cold a long time even if the freezer was shut off. You'd have to get out.

I used to walk into those things often as a kid working at McDonald to chug a chocolate milk. Seemed like we were in and out often iirc.

all im saying it might stop it from continuing to freeze. you might survive overnight in a walk in cooler, but not a walk in freezer

I honestly dont know why this comment is downvoted. The thermostat is usually always by the coil.

not when you arre already locked inside it. everything inside, by safety and FDA food codes, is sealed and not open to the air in any way or it would be a shock hazard in a wet sweaty cooler with water dripping everywhere inside it. all electrical, by law, must be sealed inside conduit and water tight boxes we arent talking about a chest freezer at your house, we are talking about commercial refrigeration systems that must meet safety and food codes
I own a walk-in freezer. It has a cord connected to an outlet inside. It is a freezer, there is no water dripping. And yes it is up to safety and food code. Now I’m sure the one that the person died in didn’t have an easy way to shut it off.

The employees have been complaining about it for months and they used something to keep it ajar so yeah it was broken.
