There are not many mechanics that will work on a VW, thus driving up the price for repairs
I have a Jetta for my son and wish I had bought him a Honda.

I have owned all 3...The Honda will be the most reliable, the VW will be the least..of that I guarantee you.
In my opinion, the money you can save on a Hyundai (it seems to be about 8k on all similar models) provides the most value. Hyundai puts a lot of effort into making sure the tech in the cars are very current so you shouldn't see much of a drop-off in accessories.
The VW have a unique style and they are certainly nice cars but if their style does not completely draw you in, then I would say narrow it to the Honda or Hyundai. Pay more for higher quality with the Honda or if what you are looking at is a savings with the Hyundai, then go with it and pocket the savings. I think they are great cars.
