Knowing when to disappear and when to come back is a talent some guys like Hogan have.

The term for it elsewhere is “Venari Job Security”, in which everything collapses whenever one guy leaves the position, which gets people to beg him to stay.

Doesn’t always work. Otto Von Bismarck tried that one and the Kaiser eventually accepted his resignation and never reappointed him.

Past Owen Hart, who can you point to and honestly claim it would have never happened if not for Vince?

A lot of the guys from the 80s who dropped dead like Hercules Hernandez were roided to the gills well before reaching WWE.

Damn smarks loved to hate him, but would pop hard anytime his music hit. There truly might not be another person ever like Vince McMahon.

Brock Lesnar is so pissed off that he’s left the building

Regardless, I’m really interested to see where the company goes from here.

Plenty of guys from the 90s though.

And if you look into the history of a lot of them, what killed them began well before they landed in WWE.

Trying not to go full on WWE apologist but Bulldog, for instance, was all roided up back in Stampede. Pillman was roided up in Stampede and both the NFL and CFL before that.

Did they do enough to handle people’s substance issues at that time? No, but the sad part is that they did more than other companies.

WCW hired Scott Hall and basically never drug tested him until he went off the rails around 98-99. TNA kept bringing back Jeff Hardy and using him despite felony drug arrests and being too fricked up to wrestle a PPV main event, etc.

Reminds me of the old football coach saying, “If you have two QBs, you have no QB.”
They brought Kahn in when they did for a reason. The two of them will be the ones looking for buyers. SummerSlam is going to be a mess.

Many of them came up through Turner/Crockett, Stu Hart, Gagne, and dozens of smaller promoters.

Pretty much.

WWE, historically, doesn’t have a lot of home grown talent before The Rock under Vince Jr. They would get guys who started elsewhere then turn them up to 11.

Hogan, Savage, Steamboat, Warrior, Flair, Undertaker, etc, started elsewhere. You had ones who were already stars like Hogan and Flair and you had ones who had worked through small territories like Memphis, ICW (Randy’s father’s outlaw promotion), and a down-on-its-arse World Class in Taker, Warrior, and Savage.

He grew up around so much of it, its hard to say it was just Vince.

The territories were so much better for that business.

I was a WWF fan when it finally came to the Monday night wars. I never really liked what new York was in terms of "characters" that Vince would create. It worked with Undertaker because of who was portraying it..

I liked his production quality. Thats what I enjoyed the most about New York. So when guys like Bret and Owen Hart, Michaels, Perfect, Rude, Guerrero, Benoit, Angle, Rock, Flair, Foley etc..get on Vince's show..it just looked great and more time than not, if you were on RAW, you were over with fans quickly, if not already.

And all those guys brought something to the table from where they learned.

For the most part that’s true. The Performance Center era has changed that though.

But pretty much everyone does indie work before the PC.

The real development revolution started with Ohio Valley Wrestling, which produced Cena, Brock, Randy Orton, and Batista amongst others.

The Performance Center is like the third or fourth attempt by WWF to build their own rather than contracting out to OVW, Homeland Wrestling Assocition, Puerto Rico, etc.

Say what you will about Cornette at OVW but the worst he got in trouble for was for slapping Santino Marella for fricking up a segment to be shown on TV. He didn’t get accused of abusing trainees under Johnny Ace’s direction like Bill DeMott.

Of course, Cornette never got into trouble for cursing out Cena and threatening him over running long on TV or threatening to get a gun and shoot Brock after Brock hurt Cornette’s current wife in the ring by not taking care of her like he said he would…
