I bought a CJ7 Jeep from from a guy in Mississippi. The title is signed as well as a bill of sale. Per Mississippi law, title transfers do not need to be notarized. (hindsight 20/20 it would have been a good idea)

I go to the Louisiana DMV to register the vehicle and am being told I need proof the previous owner still lives in Mississippi and that a picture of his drivers license would do. So I text the guy and he sends over his drivers license. After looking at it I see that its a different name on the title, in which he tells me that its because he bought the jeep to sell so he never transferred it into his name. ( So he basically forge the bill of sale to match the title). I asked the seller to contact the the previous owner but he is not sure if he will be able to track him down and get a id copy.

Sooooo, if this doesn't work (which i don't think it will), I'm trying to figure out a path forward. I know I can take this guy to court for forgery, but that is not an easy process.

What I would like advice on is this:
Could transfer the title to someone in LA ,have it notarized, then transfer it back. Then take it to the DMV for registration. Would this legally clear up my issue?

This is pure bullshite. If he can't he needs proper motivation with you contacting Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and introducing them.

I understand the excitement of getting a good looking CJ but you got carried away and were not sufficiently prudent.

This guy sent you his DL or ID so maybe it's not stolen, but he now probably is freaking out over the forgery and wants to keep the original owner unawares. Calm him down and get the original owner's ID. If he can't or won't, get in front of it and go to the LSP.
