It goes under your comprehensive coverage. Basically it’s “an act of God” due to weather and not a collision. If repairs cost $5k and your deductible is $1k you will just pay the $1k while insurance covers the final $4.
If you need a rental car check if you have rental car coverage on your policy but that should be something you know.
Since this was not a collision claim it should not go against your policy or on the CarFax. Just make sure they the repairs are done you scan every single inch of that car. Body work is easy to do but great body work is an art form that a lot of people do not care about.
Your insurance will have approved vendors to take the car too. They are all usually fine. These approved vendors are set up for efficiency and timeliness and are to meet a set timeframe on when cars need to be in and out of shapes. Usually less than 3 weeks. They also don’t want to have to pay for a rental for very long so that’s another incentive for the repairs to be done sooner.

Update:
Have an insurance company has an inspector coming to look at it Sunday. My question is what are my rights as far as not wanting junkyard or aftermarket parts slapped onto my somewhat new truck? Also after research I’m not huge on the idea of paintless dent repair. I’d like to have new factory parts or it be totaled and get a new truck.
My buddy who use to do estimates for insurance companies and worked in a body shop doing the same, says the hood needs to be replaced and the roof is borderline needing to be replaced. He says if the roof needs to be replaced it will be very costly.

I had an insurance agent tell me a story about a guy that claimed hail damage. Said it was on all sides. Insurance agent asked him “you don’t think we can tell the difference between hail and a ball peen hammer?”

Update:
They had an estimator come out the week I filed the claim. He told me they would have to cut out and weld in sections of pillars, replace the roof, and the hood. PDR the rest (fenders, doors, bed side). Told me I’d get an email in 15 minutes if it was repairable.. well, it wasn’t.
So total loss with or without retainment were the options.
Option A : payoff the truck, take the $12k in “equity” and buy a new truck.
Option B : pay $5k and retain the truck with it now paid off.
I leaned option B until the only insurance carrier I could find to give me more than liability on the truck was 3x more than what I was paying for full coverage.
So took the $12k in equity and driving a rental to Houston Friday to get the exact same model of truck a couple of years newer. Also paying off the last $2k on my wife’s car with the settlement money.
Really coming out in a better financial position than before. Minus 1 vehicle note, add $40/ mo to current note, better interest rate, same term length.

Depends on the state. Some have age restrictions and/or damage restrictions on if you can re-title a salvaged vehicle. Basically you may be able to own it, but it might not be allowed to be registered. Make sure you check in to all that first.
Also, worrying about PDR was stupid. It’s a vastly superior process than cutting in to your vehicle and welding it back.

Why on earth? My son’s car got hail damage and they did an amazing job with PDR.

It wasn’t my call, I was told it was too deep for PDR in most spots.
I was able to retain the title but it would be stamped “hail damaged”.

I might have been interested in buying the truck from you. If the damage was pretty much cosmetic I wouldn’t care about that.
