The F4F’s roll rate was better than the zero’s as well. It wasn’t feckless against the zeros, they just had to learn how to fight them.
Yeah, that was the key. The big thing was to avoid trying to dogfight the Zero. That’s where the A6M had the advantage.

I mean, the navy was using F4F’s through midway and did ok. Plus they still used wildcats off the small carriers throughout the war
That was something I didn’t know until not too long ago when they were talking about it on the Unauthorized History of the Pacific War Podcast. I believe it was on the episode about the stand of Taffy 3 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The “jeep carriers” launched everything they could against the Yamato battle group, including their Wildcats.

Have you ever done an A-10?

No. I rarely do post-war models. Ivdd ed done a small handful, but not many. My interest is primarily WWII era. However, my son built an A-10 when he was about 10-12 years old. I still have it on display with all my other models.
Not bad work for a little kid if I do say so myself.

The key was learning how not to fight the enemy's fight. Using the US aircraft's advantages against the Zero's disadvantages.

Yep. Same for the P-40 as well.

Thankfully, I had a some leftover decals that would sorta work
You could have gotten away with using Nationalist China decals considering that Claire Chennault had a Brewster Buffalo at his disposal as he was advising Generalissimo Chiang prior to creating the American Volunteer Group (Flying TIgers) in China in late 1941. He is even rumored to have shot down a Japanese bomber with that Brewster during an observation mission he was flying.
As always, great build, Darth!

Great model of a terrible aircraft.
Finland got some of our old ones and used them with a lot of success. I think they did some modifications though.

Buffalo may be the last WW2 fighter I'd want to have to fly in combat.

That was literally the only aircraft ever made by the company. They were an incompetent group of politically connected people with little to no aviation experience outside the founder, who was not trained as an engineer, yet made VP a Lockheed somehow prior to founding Brewster. And there were illegal aliens involved as well......
quote:
in 1942, the Navy seized Brewster, declaring it “essential to the war effort.” Congressional hearings revealed sabotage and loafing in the factory, derisively termed “The Bucks County Playhouse” for allegations of sexual trysts in plane fuselages. Missing tools and sloppy quality control were a constant problem.
With $100 million in orders on file, Work (ex-Lockheed VP) remained silent. Things only got worse. The Philadelphia Record revealed a profit-skimming operation had crippled Brewster. Alfred and Ignacio Miranda, Mexican-born immigrants, and associate F. William Zelcher were behind the scheme. Work had hired them as company salesmen. What he perhaps didn’t know was the Mirandas had spent two years in prison for smuggling weapons to Bolivia in violation of a U.S. arms embargo.

Thanks. Now that football season is here, I’ll probably slow down a bit.

I do have some 1:48 Nationalist insignia leftover from a P-40 kit in my decal file. But I had already painted it in pre-war US Navy scheme before I realized the decals were toast.

The Finns used the plane with great success against the Soviets for a while, but it was denuded of all of it's naval components and fitted with a more powerful engine.

You are insanely good at this. Historical attention to detail. You could dig into your trash can and build a better model than I could with a kit.

Yellow wings aren't very good camouflage
Great job Darth

Makes sense. They lightened it up and give it a more powerful engine. I’d like to build a version of the Buffalo in your pic.

Very true. But it wasn’t supposed to be. In the 30s, the Navy painted the wings of all carrier aircraft yellow so they’d be easy to spot if they had to ditch in the ocean. They discontinued this sometime in late 1940 or early 41. I’m not sure exactly when they changed paint scheme, but it was before December 1941.
