While this may be true in some cases, I've found since our plant went union in 2002, companies spend more resources managing against a contract as opposed to being 100% focused on managing against the business.
Ideally, the unions should handle more business amongst themselves. Companies do not want that though for obvious reasons.

As for us in SoLa, the local issues are resolved and its on a national level now. It is out of our control in SoLa.
And yes i am part of the union and this ongoing contract negotiation. We(most unions workers) wish the union would accept something around 3-4%(being 3% is what we have been recieving due to the last contract) and keep our benefits and insurance the same. Like i said, it is out of our hands(locally) and on a national level to which we have no control.
and for the ones who who hate on different professions because of the pay differences regardless of education.....

They all have a choice...don't join union.

This has nothing to do with safety. And being pissed about contractors is the union looking out for its own existence not the workers they represent.

No. Its not that simple.

Not that easy... Ask a union member

If that's the only place you could find a job, what then?

I have known many that haven't joined in the operator field and teachers. They may be bullied by pro-union people but it's possible.

Its not about finding another job. Not joining the union at a union facility is basically telling your coworkers to F Off and therefore it puts a dark cloud on you. If you were ever to get into a situation where you needed help, some hardcore unioners would then tell you to GFY. Its just the way it works. Being part of the union isnt all bad. This negotiating part is the hardest but there are some good things.

It used to be really bad, modern employees don't have the mentality.
I could really get into some of the benefits of a union in high risk environment, but trust me no one wants to hear that. Pay for non union sites are usually higher than union, but outsiders like to harp on the union just propping up pay.

and this is bad in what way?
I want to determine my own success with my employer, not some brainwashed fool in Pittsburgh

that has always puzzled me about union members...you pay these folks to represent you, yet you have no control over what they do on your behalf?...sounds like the tail wagging the dog to me...

Thank God for men like you. Y'all are what makes this country great.

Obviously. ... As I said, this statement is from the USW Oil Workers FB page & was issued by the VP. The propaganda that unions spout, including pictures of children holding signs saying, "My daddy deserves a safe place to work," is used in every strike and/or negotiation across the board in every industry.

Absolutely. Unions attempt to tie companies' hands by setting in stone that their workers cannot be replaced by contract workers, who, btw, many times, have more education & experience in the industry than many of the union employees. It also promotes laziness & being lackadaisical regarding the job. I've seen it first hand on many occasions for years. ... These days, unions are, for the most part, not "protecting" individual employees from the corporate "baddie." They are trying to remain relevant & sustain their money making machine by holding companies to impossible demands, which in the long run are generally not good for the company nor any of its employees.
