who says this?

I think lots of the hate here is based on pure envy. Some kid who spent a lot of time and money getting a degree finds out someone with no degree is out earning him and jealousy takes over.

to a small extent, but the educated people are educated and know it won't last. you don't see the OT criticizing the low key oilfield workers who made a killing the past few years who are living off savings right now. that flashy-braggart lifestyle is not well accepted on here from ANY clique

this is getting a little expansive, but it's cultural clashes. the best way to sum it up in a few years is this: you have one side trying to get wealthy and one side trying to get rich.

Ok so since they had it good, we'll celebrate tens of thousands of people losing their jobs

That's the part I don't get

I am not rejoicing but I really don't care.

When the real estate market bottomed out in 06'-07' no one was talking about paying more for houses so I could keep my construction crews busy.

After some hard times I adapted and moved on. No reason oil field workers can't do the same.

you're not on here enough

Lots of people say oil and gas doesn't affect them. I think Stout said it earlier in this thread

If you're in Texas or Louisiana, chances are it effects you. Even if you're not directly in the field, the states well being is directly tied to it so it is a fatally myopic view to think you aren't or won't be feeling some discomfort as well.

I must be in a rare situation because it will not affect me. I am single with no children and none of my family is tied to O&G in any way.

In fact, the longer things stay this way the busier part of my business gets. There will be a lot more repo houses for me to manage if this goes on too long.

Won't affect me directly in any way I can think of. I am single with no kids so education budget cuts won't affect me and no one in my family works for the state. My dad and brother are in management for Entergy and my sister works for me. We all have good health insurance.

and people were talking shite about a bunch of industries in that 08 time period

every industry that had just come off a "hot" period (like construction) was in the targets

there is nothing special about O/G. it just seems special due to our geography

Everyone is trying to better their lot. Nothing wrong with that, but you have to be reasonable.

because of how inflation works, not getting a raise is the equivalent of taking a paycut.

This board is so duplicitous and full of shite.

I don't know if the unions' demands are reasonable or not, but if the employers don't like it then they can get their labor from somewhere else.

Shaming people for trying to make more money is a laughable trait of the confederate states.

even if you want to make that argument, pretty much everyone has been taking that paycut since about 2005

you're not special...especially now that the O/G industry is cratering

No one is shaming people for trying to make more money. I am all for it. The issue is not letting the free market reign. If the current market doesn't demand a raise then they need to deal with it like millions of other Americans do.
