The Mandarin “fill word” is used more commonly than any fill word in any other language, and it’s not even close. It’s worthy of discussion in any international language course.

It’s even interesting in that Mandarin speakers aren’t derided for using fill words (imagine a public speaking course in the US where you were encouraged to say “Ummm...” instead of pausing, because it shows you were thinking, our entire way of viewing intelligence would change).

Dude, in my company and among my friends, people ask me all the time how to say certain phrases in Mandarin. “Naige” is in most of the phrases they ask me to say, so no, I wouldn’t fire a person for saying “that” in a different language. I would absolutely call them an idiot and to grow a fricking pairing they were offended by that or they would be fired if they wouldn’t let it go.

I think naige in the pause circumstance is more similar to how idiots use “like” rather than “ummm”. The Chinese (as does every culture as far as I’m aware) still uses “ummm”, but naige is unique to their culture.

Oh, and USMEagles, “ni ga” apparently means “You” in Korean, so should Korean and Chinese students be forbidden from saying you and that respectively in their own languages while they’re on a college campus? You’re an early frontrunner for dumbest poster of the month.
