There is such a thing as an assault rifle. An assault rifle is one that is capable of selective fire, meaning that it can be fired in semi-automatic mode and fully automatic or burst-fire mode. If a rifle has only semi-automatic fire capability, even if it looks like a rifle with selective fire capability, it is not an assault rifle. Some examples:
