What can be done to change this? If this didn't hit the news, we all know that money would have never been returned
The Feds are changing the way they handle asset forfeiture at the federal level. In most cases now you have to be convicted of a crime in order to have funds taken permanently. The problem is that most border states have very loose civil asset forfeiture laws. Last year was the first time in History of the US that Asset forfeiture exceeded property stolen from burglaries in the U.S.
Over 5 Billion in AF in 2015
With 5 Billion being sunk into government coffers around the country does anyone really think that the war on drugs is ending anytime soon. The war on drugs has little\nothing to do with ending drug abuse.
Back in the 90's Police departments were getting billions of dollars in grant money from the COPS more initiative started by President Clinton. Not only was it paying for officers on the street but paying for technology, vests etc. Well that money started drying up in 2005 and vanished after Obama took over. Police departments looked for new ways to fund their operations. Now Asset forfeiture just didn't start in 2008 but laws became more lax and Police are more aggressive with it. It's all about the money at the end of the day.
