Now wait a minute, I thought these monuments were coming down because they reminded people of slave owners?
No, they're on the "traitors who fought against the US" meme now. They haven't had time to move the goalposts yet.

Yeah, in a week they'll be symbols of anti genderqueer rights

Do you think the snowflakes want the monuments torn down because they fought against the Union? LOL
The irony of the whole situation is that all these retards that are demanding the statues to be removed hate the US more than Lee ever did.

The same people who'll tell you that it's not about slavery, but removing statues of men who fought against the US will be the first to argue that the Civil War was about slavery and nothing else.
I'd say it's circular logic, but it's way more convoluted than that.

1) Economic Domination, not slavery, was the major issue
The Confederate army was made up mostly of simple non-slave owning farmers, Approximately 90-97% of the Confederacy. Why would these common men leave their families and risk their lives for a cause unrelated to them? All that these men wanted was to claim their lawful right to secede and gain the freedom to create a country of their own. With tremendous courage these men stood up for what they knew was right. Starving and outnumbered, they fought, bled and died for their beliefs. With steadfast determination and pride for their Southern names they did all this under the Confederate battle flag.
The truth about the Confederate army is that it has nothing to do with racism or hate. The civil war was not fought over slavery or racism. It was about freedom, government and taxation without representation. Just as the war for American Independence (1776) the war for Southern Independence (1861) was fought over the federal government constantly trying to raise taxes on the Southern people. This was done through high tariffs on imported goods, in order to protect the inefficient big businesses in the North. These big businesses could not compete with manufactured goods from England and France with whom the South traded cotton. The South did not have factories and had to import most finished goods. The industrial Revolution allowed England and France to produce and ship across the Atlantic products that were cheaper than the products coming from the Northern manufacturers.

2) States Rights vs Federalism
The primary cause of the Civil War was states' rights. The South felt that it was being dominated by the North, and sought to protect their rights to self-government.

Well, that does it. Racism is now dead, now that UT has gotten rid of the statues.

Their only metric for supporting a cause these days is "will this piss off non-progressive white people?".
I guess the only redeeming thing about that is that non-progressive white people are a giant chunk of the voting block in this country and will likely ensure that none of the politicians that support this nonsense will see higher offices in the near future.
It's people like these activists that caused a Trump presidency. Normal people are tired of the constant outrage over everything so they voted for a guy who told these people to frick off.

Sam Houston was a slaveholder, himself. His statues better be "watching their backs".
almost begrudging a slaveholder if you believe some accounts(bought some to get elected.)
While in the Senate Houston voted against every expansion of slavery and voted for tons of native protections.
quote:
As a senator, according to the Texas State Historical Association’s Handbook of Texas, Houston angered pro-slavery factions by voting in 1848 to prohibit slavery in Oregon; supporting the delicately balanced slavery/anti-slavery decisions in the Compromise of 1850; and opposing, in 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act that let territories decide their own slavery status, repealing previous law that banned slavery north of latitude 36°30'.

Robert E Lee said he would fight for whatever side Virginia chose. Virginian first and foremost. It was about state's rights, as it still is today.
State's rights, in the context of the Civil War, is just a romantic way to say it was about slavery. The southern states seceded because Lincoln's victory meant slavery - and the southern culture and economy - was likely coming to an end. Disunion was their only hope to preserve their way of life. Secession soon followed, and the Union went to war with the CSA as a result.
To put it another way, the Civil War was fought because the Union rejected the secession by the CSA. The CSA seceded primarily due to slavery. That's it. All of the states' rights issues before and after the Civil War have failed to result in secession from the union. The only one that caused secession was slavery.
