I bet they're laughing now when they are hitting them with those firecrackers. But those things aren't going to cut it when those cops start marching.

Do the protesters have access to guns, or did they believe their government when it told them that they didn't need them?
Posted on 1/21/14 at 9:42 pm to beaver
I'm not sure the protesters planned for what to do once they erected their barricades. Looks like they've hit a revolutionary cul-de-sac

Yep. This all started about two months ago, when Ukraine had to decide whether to sign a trade agreement with the European Union, bringing it closer to Western Europe, or sign up for a Russian dominated trade bloc instead. There were ongoing protests until a few weeks ago when the government went with the Russia deal (some would say they were strong armed by Putin and lured in with some debt relief sweeteners). Some are afraid that Russia is trying to vassalize Ukraine again like the old empire/USSR days. A lot of people are still pissed about that, and you'll see a few EU flags in the crowd as a result. The country is about 17% Russian, mostly in the eastern part of the country.
There's also a general discontent with the Yanukovych government - corruption, oligarchism, etc.
The current violence has been going on for about 48 hours, in response to a new law the Ukrainian government passed without debate that essentially makes protesting all but illegal. You cannot wear helmets outside, for instance, and there are extremely broad limits as to what constitutes distributing propaganda or aiding protests. So that was kind of the last straw.
