Here are the key dates that have shaped the protests:
Nov. 21 — President Viktor Yanukovych's cabinet announces that they are abandoning an agreement that would strengthen ties with the EU, and instead seek closer cooperation with Moscow.

Nov. 30 — Police launch a brutal attack on protesters, detaining 35. Images of protesters bloodied by police truncheons spread quickly and galvanize public support for the demonstrators.

A demonstration on Dec. 1 attracted around 300,000 people, the largest protest in Kiev since the Orange Revolution in 2004.

Dec. 17 — Russian President Vladimir Putin announces that Moscow will buy $15 billion worth of Ukrainian government bonds and allow for a sharp cut in the price Ukrainians will have to pay for Russian natural gas. Putin and Yanukovych claim that there were no conditions attached to the agreement, which did not require Ukraine to join a Russia-led free trade pact.

Jan. 22 — Two protesters die after being hit with live ammunition and the third after a fall during a confrontation between police and demonstrators manning barricades, the first protest deaths.

How has the military not been involved and only the local police? The President seems very timid.

I think it's funny that there admins seem to delete any anti-Russian or pro-western comments. You only catch glimpses of them when someone quotes them to respond with some pro-Russian comment. I know the US can be corrupt and often has a hand in other nations dealings, but why do we always seem to get the lion’s share of the blame when any nation has unrest?

Is anyone else offended by these "-bro" nicknames? Maybe it's just me, but I feel like "gasmask-bro" or "chainsaw-bro" shows a complete disconnect to what everyone is watching. Almost like a lot of this thread is watching a match on TV and cheering on their favourite team. Yes, I support the revolution and hope the regime collapses...but in reading a lot of these comments, I feel as if a bunch of ignorant teenangers are watching along with me. Please everyone keep in mind while watching, these are real people, real atrocities, real lives being lost and affected. This is a great and terrible thing at the same time and there should be no levity. Just my two cents.

Sounds like one our favorite TD posters!

Ultimatum of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Zaharchenko

I want to thank all those who participated in the liberation of two police officers who were seized the so-called "guards of Maidan " andheld in the building of the KSCA. peaceful protesters and foreign ambassadors helped us in the negotiation process.

Prisoned law enforcers were tortured and are now hospitalized. And this is not the first case of disturbances that occur in occupied buildings where extremists beat and tortured people.

I appeal to the leaders of the opposition. If you are really Patriots and want to keep our state, you must show political maturity and wisdom. This is not a war game. There are real sacrifices - policemen burning alive, extremists shoot people. They hide behind women and children, they want chaos.

On the blood we can not build a strong state.

Leave radicals, nobody will prevent peaceful protest, go to any other, safer place.

I, as the Minister of Internal Affairs, I guarantee you assistance of the police and security of peaceful protesters.

Those who remain on the Maidan and trapped buildings, we assume extremist groups. And, in case of danger and radical actions will have to use force.

Minister of Internal Affairs General Internal Service of Ukraine Vitaly Zakharchenko

We should send Frenchy over there to paint the scene, especially at night with the flames leaping into the air.

Oh and thanks Tigris for bustin' out the Uncle Remus reference.
