This post deserves more attention...

I'd think it would be the opposite:

"Dear OT Baller,
Uber is so disappointed by the tragedy in Charlottesville, that we promise to make our services available to all future Neo-Nazi demonstrations. The last thing we want is for them to be driving themselves around.
Sincerely,
- Uber"

Yeah kinda, in case you haven't been paying attention they are planning many more demonstrations including LSU. Thankfully most places are telling them to get fricked.

Nope just hate speech. I actually fight for you and their right to free speech. You may want to actually learn what free speech is so you don't continue to make a fool of yourself. Freedom of speech doesn't mean that someone has to give you a platform to speak from. It just means you can't be persecuted for speaking. So you go enjoy your clan meeting and have a great day.

I would say that when you say Uber is wrong for saying that White Supremacist are bad, most people's opinion of you would be that you are either a racist or a White Supremacist apologist.

Your are creating a false dichotomy. The problem that most people have with Ubers comments arent the content of the comments but the fact that they feel the need to weigh in at all. Social issues arent a part of their business function they arent the countrys role model or moral leader.

They provide a service for a fee. That is their only function. They stand to gain nothing from social commentary and its a very bad business move anytime any business makes commentary like this. You have everything to lose and nothing to gain. Companies like these are usually mostly filled with like minded people who want to use their company positions as a megaphone to affect social and political change. They are so easily whipped up into a frenzy that they lose sight of the interests of their business.

In short, they are, at best, incredibly immature and at worst borderline sociopaths.

How dare they do anything but bring you from point A to point B. I don't see how denouncing Neo Nazis is social commentary. As if there is half the country who disagree that they suck. It would be like saying if Uber sent out an email saying Merry Christmas and Jews complained because they didn't say Happy Hanukkah. Maybe they were just stating the obvious because in the current climate certain things seem to need to be stated. I just feel that saying you will never use Uber because they said the denounce White Supremacist is ignorant and short sided.

They can do whatever they like. They are a private corporation. I merely stated that its a bad business decision and it is. I would always defend a private business' right to mingle their personal and business opinions as much or as little as they like regardless of how much I do or dont agree with either their message or their decision to do it but its still a bad BUSINESS decision.

If its not social commentary then how would you describe it? Business commentary? Scientific commentary? Help me out here.

Again. This would be a bad business decision. Rightly or wrongly you would possibly lose customers from every other religion including the non-religious. What would you gain? A very careful cost-benefit analysis would have to be conducted and it would likely show that the gains, if any, would be minimal compared to the losses. This very scenario happened with Starbucks.

Maybe they were just stating the obvious because in the current climate certain things seem to need to be stated.

1. Its not obvious to everyone.
2. Nothing of the sort needs to be said by anyone, much less a for-profit corporation.
3. If its so "obvious" then why state anything at all?

quote:

I just feel that saying you will never use Uber because they said the denounce White Supremacist is ignorant and short sided.

1. I never said I would never use Uber. I understand youre probably referring to the others that stated that.
2. Again, my read of it is that these people abandoning Uber arent abandoning them because of what they said but the very fact that they said it or anything at all about a situation that has nothing to do with the transportation industry and are selective in which topics they choose to comment on which can tip their hand that theyre the sort of people certain customers dont want to associate with or give their money to, i.e., special snowflakes who dont know when to keep their mouths closed.

That's kinda the point. They're denouncing .000001% of the population in an attempt to gain some sort of social justice recognition. I haven't gotten any emails when radical Muslim terrorists committed atrocities against people. Nor did I get any emails when BLM supporters were murdering cops in Dallas. So why am I getting an email now?

Maybe it's because of all the negative press they're getting for stealing another company's proprietary info and then trying to hide information in court before being caught. But uber stands for the little guy!

You may want to study a bit more what you're fighting for. Free speech (in the context of a public universities) does in fact require those universities to provide a platform for all speech, including hate speech. Where universities allow people to speak (which they all do), there cannot be restrictions based on the content of that speech.
