One of these days when the world is right again, I'm going to take a summer road trip through North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho just to see what's up there

Great plan. But IMO, skip North Dakota and focus on the other three. Maybe sub in South Dakota (Badlands, Spearfish, sturgis, Deadwood, and Rushmore)

I heard Glacier Park just closed. Sucks for the folks that use the < 1% of the park that's front-country.

That glacial blue is a cool phenomenon. It's caused by "rock flour" suspended in the water. Rocks that have been pulverized by the glaciers into a much finer material than even sand.

So Louisianans can’t go to Texas, Florida, or Montana at the moment unless it’s for work? Any others I’m missing?

It closed to visitors last Friday at 5PM until further notice. The mountains here are still in full on winter mode, so there’s really nowhere to go for basic arse tourists anyway.

People that ski in Montana are bad asses, not run of the mill tourist skiers. Most of my buddies that ski love Whitefish because it’s got a backcountry front country feel. I don’t resort ski, but I do some touring in the mountains and it’s unexplainable how liberating it is to be in such quiet and remote areas.

You can have Utah

"You're telling me I can't drive to the roadblock at Avalanche,McDonald Lodge, ect and turn around?"

"How will I brag to my co-workers I saw Glacier Park?"

I agree about the South Dakota part. I think I threw in North Dakota because in one part of my mind I was going to start the trip off by flying into Minneapolis and renting a car...and North Dakota is close by. Of course, South Dakota is too

Thanks to all for the input and reassurance that my idea has merit as a worthwhile thing to do.

Lake McDonald is a blessing to those of us who actually explore the park’s backcountry. All the grandmas and grandpas that hog up the campgrounds and have their “big hike” to Avalanche or Hidden Lake Overlook don’t really know what they’re missing out on by not being in the backcountry. But alas, we have it to ourselves.

With that being said, I tend to stick to the national forests and wilderness areas here more so than the park.

Coming up from Louisiana get on I29 in Kansas City, north to Sioux Falls, SD the take I90 west across South Dakota. The West will emerge as you cross the Missouri River at Chamberlain, SD.

A month ago I drove from Everett, WA back home to SoDak. Incredible drive that took 24 hours. The scenery was breathtaking. The Black Hills of South Dakota hold their own against the Rockies in a different sort of way. It's a different sort of beautiful. Very impressed with the Big Horn mountains near Sheridan as well.

I think a drive across the West like that is something everybody should do once in their life just to get an idea of how big it really is.

Id love to see some sort of visitor real-time heat map of the park in summer.
Watch a glowing worm on GTTS Rd.
And a few dozen anywhere else.

Then compare that to Great Bear, Many Glacier, The Bob.....
