It's called an acoustic coupler. It was capable of moving data at an incredible data rate of 150 to 300 baud.
I used one of these beasts in the old days. :-)

You could hear the computers do a "hand shake" and then connect if everything was kosher.

Acoustic modem although the holes are kinda far apart.
