Do I stop at the first line, or the second?

If the first, why is there even a second?

Assuming no cars are ahead of me.

The one closer to the light. It’s goofy. I’m not sure of the point of the other one.

The 1st line is intended to give space for cars turning left from E Lakeshore Dr. Look at google maps

You stop at the first one. The second one is there to allow the cars from E lakeshore to get out and turn left

My understanding is if you are the first car at the light you can stop at the line closest to the light.

If you are approaching the intersection and is red then stop at the second line to allow cars to merge onto Stanford.

Alot like the "don't block the box" which one one in Louisiana seems to follow...

line closest to light if you are car #1, if you are car #2 you stop at 2nd line. Its supposed to allow 1 vehicle to exit lakeshore onto the gap if need be

Birmingham has a similar intersection, except that there is enough Fox-6, TV-13 and Vulcan traffic coming down Red mountain that the second line has another set of stop lights. All well and good to turn into Valley Ave., but you also get to watch traffic coming in hot from 3 other directions. Fun times.
