If you are planning a cruise & the travel agent you're talking to is giving you the same prices that you get off the cruise line's website, what's the purpose of the travel agent?
Also, does anyone know any good travel agents that can beat the listed prices?

I wouldn't go with a travel agent unless they give you some really good benefits like OBC, free dinner in the speciality restaurant or a great price. Otherwise book on your own and control every aspect. Many travel agents wont honor price drops while the cruise lines will if you book under the right rate. I once booked through a travel agent then was offered the same cruise for basically free, called up the agent but couldn't get out of our booking and she was really rude about it. I know a lot about cruising so I am doing all my own bookings from now on. I even did our European cruise myself although I may reach out to a TA for flights and hotel pre-cruise.

I don't understand the need for a travel agent if you are doing a cruise. I though the point in using them is to help you plan and book places in a multi city trip where you are unfamiliar with the aaa area. What's the point if you are staying on a boat?

DO travel agents save money? Nope.....but they save time and frustration. I use them and if anything goes wrong or if I have to change anything in my plans or whatever....I simply turn it over to the travel agent to deal with.
Often I will find my trip online and then just let the TA book it.

I use them for international trips only. Although, I have no intention of wasting money on a cruise.

Here is when I would use a travel agent as a Dad who travels in a party of five. Let's say I have four "windows" of travel during the year and am looking for a deal. I call the agent, give them my dates and an approximate budget and let them find something interesting. Sometimes they get deals and have ideas and know hotels/resorts a little better.
For instance I can travel in December after the 18th returning home before January 6th. I want a place that sleeps five and I want a maximum air travel day of ten hours including layovers. My budget for five is 5k. Whattya gots?

So your basically saying "hey random person, tell me what vacation I should go on. I apparently have so much vacation time on my hands that I don't really care what I do."
