There is a solution that has not been brought up yet in this thread.
Move out of BR and/or out of the State all together. Problem solved.

Probably dead by now.

traffic engineers are in agreement that this is going to work.
After reading through an article in December about the Govt St diet I was left with more questions than answers.
The positive takeaway is that the city wants an uptown New Orleans feel ala Magazine St. I think a classic store front area of town would be great.
My main issue is that they don't address where the traffic will move to once Gov St becomes less viable for commuting downtown from mid city. Florida bottle necks when you get close to downtown, and it already has its own traffic issues. Neighborhood streets through capital heights already have plenty of traffic from cars cutting through. These issue would only get worse if reducing the size of Gov St has a negative impact on commuting.
The biggest problem I see is bus traffic on a 3 lane Gov St clogging everything as busses make periodic stops along the way. If they don't create bus pickup lanes, it could make Gov St unusable.
Perhaps a light rale down Nicholson isn't actually the only spot needed. One servicing mid city towards downtown and LSU would be fantastic.

As a former traffic engineer in Baton Rouge, I can tell you that you are correct. It's very difficult to untangle this mess, particularly with a city which largely does not favor connectivity (mainly the NIMBY's). To add to that, the politics, lack of funding, and general ineptitude of the government agencies put further restrictions on what can be done. It's a sad state of affairs, and one of the reasons I changed sub-disciplines. It's very unfulfilling.
So much this. It is beyond frustrating dealing with government traffic officials and city planners who are so inept at their job. Many of these folks would never survive in the private sector.

Government street plan is LOLworthy. If I were a merchant on that street paying rent based on current traffic counts I would tell my land lord to lower my rent when this happens or kiss it. Furthermore this incredibly ridiculous scenario is going to drive traffic to other east-west streets and away from government street businesses. There are actually several merchants who support it. wtf?
