Do military pilots generally only fly one air craft type because movie wise seems like they fly different ones

Do you think Top Gun is a documentary or something?

Why would he be asking the question if he thought it was a documentary?

Generally, it’s one aircraft. They usually choose cargo or fighter route and after pilot training can put their preferred planes and bases on their dream list for drop night. At least, that’s my understanding from knowing folks in the USAF.

I worked at Panasonic and they glue laptop screws in because if a screw is found in cockpit it is a million dollar expedition

At least that was urban legend

I'd like to know why Maverick was told to get back in the plane and not attend Goose's funeral.

naw, not true, I found a communist looking dragonfly sitting on my Martin-Baker once, after hours of interrogation we had to let it go, it was only a conscientious objecting dragonfly

Why did the generic enemy in Maverick have better planes than the USA?

My brother is an aircraft mechanic, that is true. They will take the whole thing apart and put it back together to make sure nothing goes wrong in-flight

If you are flying an actively used aircraft for the military, you get slotted into one particular plane and that is it.

It is competitive enough even getting into flight school that they have their pick of who they want for each plane. You have to have very good uncorrected vision to even be considered for a fighter plane.

One of my best friends had good corrected vision but bad uncorrected vision. They slotted him into some kind of carrier based plane used as a sub spotter rather than something he’d have preferred like an F-18 or F-22.

And he is one of the ones who made it. I also know someone who graduated from the Naval academy who tried to go to flight school and eventually got washed out because of BS reasons. At least one other person she was there with mentioned taking a Tagamet or something similar on occasion and they immediately DQed him claiming acid reflux.

With regard to at least the original Top Gun, the active duty guys there were all F-14 Tomcat pilots. The upper echelon guys like Jester and Viper were put into different planes than they flew in active duty because they needed the active guys to go up against the equivalent of the kinds of MiGs they would see in action.

Viper, for example, probably flew an F-4 Phantom in Vietnam before transitioning into flying the French jet used as a mock MiG for training.

Depends on how badly they need pilots at that moment, from what I have been told.

The supply of people wanting those slots vs the number of slots available is so out of whack they can afford to be picky.

Typically only one, unless their platform is nearing end of lifecycle and they transition during their career to something new.
