All of this is BS. Getting a doctorate is just difficult and it’s intended to be difficult.
For example. Yes, getting an MD is very different from a PhD. But the are both difficult in their own ways. The things that MDs must learn and understand are very different than what a PhD must learn. They are also very different because the MD is a practice doctorate and the PhD is a researcher. Each plays their own important role. You really can’t compare them like this.

Wine tasting as a profession doesn’t exactly attract the creme de la creme. Standing as the best of the worst isn’t much of a vantage for boasting.

What do you find so offensive about a nice glass of wine?

I have not watched Somm. I just know someone that has passed the first level and is working on the next level. She was managing the liquor/wine store her dad owned. I think she may be moving to Oregon since they sold it to continue in the wine industry. Makes me sad cause she would order beers at my request and when she couldn't get them in she would continue to follow up with the distributors to let them know that they had customers interested.
I need to take her out to a steak dinner to get her to stay if you know what I mean.

I am taking a contrarian view but mostly to point out that there are plenty of other Ph.D programs and other educational directions that are much more or equally as difficult and exclusive. MDs don't have to think outside of the box. They don't have to use creativity. They are put in a box given a bunch of books and say here study all of this and you get to be a doctor. They are also surrounded by peers that are on the same exact path and they can all get together and study the same stuff. Where as other fields literally have to come up with the experiment to prove their thesis. They have to create something to prove a point and it takes years and many failures before they get to that point. There isn't some set path that everyone takes.
That being said MDs do work their arse off so I do have much respect for them, too. I couldn't do it.
