The recovery is gonna be much longer and tougher than that of someone who had their tonsils out as a kid.

Be aware of that. Also...no straws, no straws, no straws. And excessive bleeding afterwards can be a big deal so don't dismiss it.

Stock up on her favorite ice cream now. Also go buy a bunch of soft foods she likes(mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, stuff like that).

Make sure to get her script for pain meds filled....she will likely need it. Good luck

It can accidentally scratch the back of the throat(where the surgical site is) and cause more bleeding(and pain).

Ok. Good to know. I am sure she thinks a straw is no problem. I will let her know.

How long for recuperation? We are suppose to go out of town in 5-6 weeks.

Had mine out at 34. Worst month of my life! I also had a uvolectomy at the same time, couldn't eat foods with any salt or seasoning for a solid month and nothing solid for 2-3 weeks.

Had mine out at 21. Liquid lortab and lidocaine kept me in check. I personally wouldn't advice dairy products because they'll make you swallow more. I stuck to apple juice, Gatorade and those fruit popsicle things, think the brand is Edy's or something. Oh and stay away from acidic liquids and juices. Don't force solids, everyone heals differently.

Do the liquid pain meds irritate the throat going down?

Will be MUCH easier to take than to try and swallow a pill.

They should give her detailed instructions on what to do after surgery(regarding diet, pain meds, etc). If they don't give this to you guys before yall go home, ask for one.

I think we have all that. I will make sure before her discharge. I am mostly concerned because she is 65.

A coworker of mine had his out in his mid 40's. it was pretty damn rough on him and he stayed out of work for a month or 6 weeks.

he had some kind of shite earlier in life like mono that damaged his tonsils to the point that they had to be removed decades later.
