To refugium or not to refugium?

Is it a good idea to put a refugium in a sump? I am just trying to figure out if the pros outweigh the cons

Google the pros and cons...
I have never used anything other than canisters 2-3x larger than recommended...I am sure there are local/state sites just like the LARC that I posted..

Reefcentral was one that I used to frequent when I had saltwater tanks. Haven't had them tho since I lost it all after Katrina. As for the Question I have never ran them...

A good Refugium with cheato will help remove excess nutrients from your system, but when you consider the size of the tank vs the size of the refugium in the sump, it's not very effective (like using an eye-dropper on a house fire).
The refugiums that I've seen be successful are stand alone, have a fair amount of volume, use a lot of live rock to add extra filtration to the system, and use some macro algae. It's not a silver bullet, but it does help reduce your bioload if done correctly.
Because most people don't have a dedicated sump room to store an extra refugium and frag tank, they typically don't use them. Now, if you want to do it in your sump for aesthetics, to grow pods and other food supplements for your DT, or to help reduce micro bubbles ... It's perfectly fine for that. But like I said earlier, it won't have much of a benefit in helping reduce your bioload.
With all that said, I've seen plenty of systems set up both ways. It really is just a personal preference.

That was an excellent answer.
If size and room are at a minimum perhaps the op should consider a biopellet reactor. (depends on size of DT)
