Did it to my apartment years ago in Texas. I was a cheap bastard and used those three dollar emergency space blankets from Walmart.
One blanket did one window, it worked pretty good too. The only problem was it turns the window into a two-way mirror.
Dark inside bright outside can see out. Dark outside bright inside can see nothing outside. But that helps in winter by keeping heat inside.

You should consider solar screens. Pretty easy to diy if you are so motivated.
