- narrated by Mike Rowe.
the you can read this article about the thousands of hours of simulator time still underway in order to determine how to safely navigate the 366-meter and even the new 400-meter container ships into the ship channel, if its even possible at all.

I noticed we had a few plant operator threads today, so I figured we should take a further look into the OT's other favorite profession. But this time we are going to focus on a port other than the infamous Mississippi River Pilots.
if you'd like to pursue a career as a Houston Harbor Pilot, here is the application procedure including the list of minimum requirements

The Houston Pilots permit ships that are up to 1,100 feet long and 143 feet wide in certain sections of the channel. Bigger ships will be permitted as various channel improvements are made and the pilots gain more experience with these vessels, Shearon said.
Both the pilots and Port Houston are working to accommodate the largest ships that can go through the Panama Canal. Port Houston has spent hundreds of millions of dollars since the early 2000s in preparation.

Nah I'd rather just maintain their channel

I have a cousin who trains tug captains in Houston. No thanks. That's long, lonely work.

Besides mike rowe, the video sucked. Thought it was gonna be an inside look at the pilots job but it was just a circle jerk , bragging about what they do and how important it is.

Watched the whole video.
Gained an appreciation for the job, but it DID NOT make me want to become a pilot.
Seems tedious, high stress, and an easy opportunity to become a scapegoat.

In LA all you need to be a river pilot is a GED, and uncle that's a river pilot, you are then on your way to making $400 grand your first year, at least that's what I read on the OT.

The first time someone tags a bridge and it comes crumbling down I'm going to blame you and this thread for opening the door to the OT baws that decided to become a pilot in the HSC.
Live with that on your conscience.

Lol. You should be more concerned over two loaded 900 foot tankers hitting each other than a ship hitting a bridge in the HSC

The Houston Pilots aren't held liable for any of the accidents they cause

Looks like a propaganda film.
