I know retirees who make > $100K / yr in pensions + SS with no debt (ie houses/vehicles/etc paid for). These people probably don't need alot in retirement savings to live well.

Good frick EM! They deserve to be poor in old age when they decided to rack up debt for their exorbitant homes, cars, etc. Zero sympathy from me.
You don't know shite about the ups & downs of life- I am 61 & don't plan on working till 65, trying to figure out what I will need. In my working years I lived good (driving a Maserati at 30)& not so good (both me & my wife losing our jobs at almost the same time). You can say you are prepared, but you never know what life will throw at you. I didn't piss all my money away like a lot of people but I wasn't going live like a pauper either.
